Chris Knox: Not Given Lightly

What we did

Book Design

This book tells the story of one of New Zealand’s most outspoken and influential alternative creative and cultural commentators once described by the Village Voice as ‘indie rock’s premier oddball singer songwriter’. It traces the socio-political landscape of Knox’s New Zealand that led to his extraordinarily creative journey from the obscurity of DIY punk rock to the heart of New Zealand media as an unfashionably opinionated musician, designer, cartoonist, film reviewer, columnist and presenter who garnered a niche international respect.

The driver for this book is to utilise design and print production to suggest Knox’s ‘handcrafted craziness’ / laissez-faire approach to making, where Knox’s prioritising of completion always won over perfectionism or virtuosity. The design reflects Knox’s lo-fi world as a rambunctious counterpoint to biographical conventions.

The hi-lo jacket vs case cover design is a tension played with throughout the book. The textured Arlin jacket reminds us of amp/speaker cabinets and guitar cases with the duotone headshot fulfilling conventional biographical obligations. Underneath the jacket is a second, Knox illustrated cover and different spine typography on low-grade kraft paper. This stock flows onto the end papers which tells a chunk of Knox’s life story in a graphic form along with musical ephemera at the rear. The kraft case cover and endpapers remind us of the DIY packaging and single-colour production of the early years.

Internally a selection of low-grade gloss and uncoated stocks deal with a range of scrapbook and musical ephemera inserted (like typical plate sections) throughout the book but in alternating rhythms of stock order to suit the narrative and imagery. These ‘plate’ inserts act as a loosely scrambled, anarchic personal counterpoint to the organised conventionality of the rest of the book. The fans-only timeline and selected discography sit somewhere in between of the order and playful chaos going the extra distance to elevate the book above a standard biographical offer.

Typographically the chapters and endmatter have a no-fuss utility to the typeface, while the unpredictable monotype serif captioning reflects more of Knox’s personality and his use of the typewriter in his album design in the early years.

This book seeks to playfully challenge the conventions of a biography, not just a documentation of Knox’s body of work, but also what inspired it. It speaks to the value of persistent creativity and how it can ultimately drive us forward, contributing to reshaping narratives and cultural norms from an outsider’s perspective.

Even after Knox’s stroke, his infectious energy and creative spirit shine through as an inspiration to those who have their own unique creative vision.
